Today my blog is all about Reflexology. I wanted to explain how it works and all the benefits you can get from it. To help me understand how my client feels, I decided to go and try it out for myself! Us therapists are great at giving treatments, but not so good at practising what we preach!
I totally believe our clients about all the wonderful benefits they get from a reflexology treatment, but to be honest, I was only looking for an excuse to have an hour of pure relaxation and healing to myself.
Before, I go through the magic of my own treatment, here is a bit of background about Reflexology.
Reflexology is suitable for all ages and throughout every stage of life. This gentle therapy may bring relief from a wide range of both acute and chronic conditions. It is an acupressure massage of the feet. Reflexology works on all levels to bring the body to a relaxed balanced state.
It is also effective for:
Strengthening the immune systemReducing stress and inducing relaxationImproving circulation of both blood and lymphProvides a more efficient removal of toxins and impuritiesRevitalises and energises the bodyAllows the body to balance itself
Not so long ago I did a refresher reflexology course in the River Holistic centre in Raheny, so I decided to return for my own treatment. A lovely therapist called Emma was giving my treatment. My session began with a consultation, information about my general health, medication and lifestyle was all noted (to be honest I would consider myself very healthy, I eat well, take regular exercise down in The Gym and I am rarely sick, so I was not looking for anything miraculous just a nice hour of rebalancing and a bit of pampering ).
It was totally relaxing right from the beginning and it took about five minutes for me to feel my body relax into the treatment. I personally feel you get much more out of a session if you close your eyes and let the therapist do what they do best. At the beginning I was conscious of what area of the foot Emma was working on and what part of the body that correlated to but after ten minutes I was totally on a different planet.
I was conscious of her working on my foot but not paying any attention to the area of the foot she was working on. The pressure Emma was using was gentle but firm at the same time, not in any way uncomfortable very soothing actually, now and again I could feel my body twitch as I was totally relaxing . The hour went by before I knew it. I can honestly say it felt like I was giving myself a well-deserved full body pampering treat.
The therapist noted that my left ear felt a bit gritty and asked me how my sinuses were? I forgot to tell her I suffer with hay fever so I am constantly blocked up at this time of year. She also mentioned that my pelvic floor was higher on one side than the other, the only time this would bother me is when I do a Yoga class and I always feel one side is way tighter than the other.
This holistic treatment was such a treat for me and I felt very calm and contented afterwards. I am definitely going to treat myself to some reflexology once a month. I can only describe it as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and I felt very light on my feet.
I think what is great about reflexology is that it treats the whole body and it will help whatever you are dealing with at any given time, be it a physical imbalance or a mental anguish. It enables your own body to gently rebalance and heal itself.
I offer a full reflexology treatment here at The Salon for €60, and we offer your 6th treatment free when you buy a bulk of 5-sessions and after realizing how powerful it actually is, I would strongly recommend that you make it a monthly healing session for yourself. After all, our bodies and minds are amazing and every now and then they deserve some pampering. I would advise on the day of your treatment that you free up your schedule as much as you can so that you can enjoy the after effects for the entire day. Don’t forget to drink lots of water after your reflexology as it has a mild detoxing effect on your body - and don’t wait too long to get your treatment after all you deserve it.
If you want to book in with me for a session, you can do so online: www.thesalonhowth.com/book or call us; 01 816 7080
See you soon,

P.S: I also slept like a baby that night; the seagulls nesting on my roof didn’t even disturb me!
