Why weight train?

A few weeks back in FitCamp class a female gym member asked me whether she’d “bulk up using weights?” She was quite concerned as she really didn’t want to get “big and muscle-y.”

As this is a question I’ve been asked on several occasions, I thought it might be worth writing a blog post on it. The answer is: no. Unless you decide to commit to a strict training programme alongside a “muscle building diet” (steak for breakfast for example), you’re never going to bulk up and get that muscley.

There’s often a stigma attached to women and weight training which really shouldn’t be the case. While cardio has always played a significant role in exercise, strength training is of equal importance. In fact, regular strength training has some unique benefits that are simply impossible to achieve with cardiovascular type exercises alone.

Wondering whether you should consider including some weight training in your fitness plan, here’s 10 good reasons why:

Decrease in Body Fat - weight training builds muscle, as lean muscle increases so does metabolism. It helps you burn more calories efficiently.

Gain Strength without Bulking – crucial for everyday activities such as carrying the shopping, lifting toddlers, general housework etc.

Increases your bone density – so decreased risk of osteoporosis.

Reduce risk of injury.

Burn more calories for weight loss.

Improve posture and reduce back pain.

Enhance mood & reduce stress

Builds a stronger heart, so reduces your resting blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Helps control blood sugar and improves cholesterol levels.

Improves your balance and coordination.

So, there you have it! For anyone considering personal training or attending FitCamp classes regularly, there’s plenty of reasons to do so. For any further questions feel free to talk to one of our trainers.

Looking forward to working with you soon!

Siobhan :)
